What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a fast-changing technology that is increasingly being used across the federal government to improve how programs and services are delivered.

How does the Board use AI?

At the Veterans Review and Appeal Board, we are exploring and using AI to support our work and improve efficiency, while maintaining our commitment to fair, transparent, and independent decision-making. 

AI may be used to assist Board Members and employees with certain administrative, and support activities like locating documents or references, creating summaries, conducting research, and improving the clarity or readability of written content. However, AI does not make decisions on reviews or appeals.

Board Members are independent decision-makers and remain responsible for reviewing and assessing the evidence, applying the law, and making decisions. AI cannot replace a Board Member's independent judgment or generate the reasoning that determines the outcome of a case.

Responsible use of AI

The Board is committed to the responsible, secure and transparent use of AI.

Board Members and employees are required to use Government of Canada-approved AI tools and to follow applicable privacy, information management, and information security requirements.

AI-generated information must be reviewed and verified before it is used.

Artificial intelligence offers opportunities to improve how the Government of Canada works and delivers services, as outlined in AI Strategy for the Federal Public Service. As the Board explores these opportunities, we will continue to follow Government of Canada requirements for the responsible use of AI requirements and guidance for the responsible use of AI.

Our approach recognizes the unique role of the Veterans Review and Appeal Board as an independent administrative tribunal. AI can support our work, but decisions affecting Veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP members, and their families will continue to be made by the Board Members who are legally authorized to make them.
